Married Vera after proposing to her whilst they were sitting in seats 33 and 34 of The Tower Ballroom.
1929 (30th March)
The first WurliTzer was installed at The Tower Ballromm.(2 manual 10 rank, Model 205 Special WurliTzer, works no. 2037)
1930
Secured the position of Resident Organist at the Tower Ballroom, Blackpool.
1930 (June)
Made his first radio broadcast.
1932 (July)
Made his first record, 12" 78 on the Sterno Label, Cat.No. 8030. "Lilac Time Selection" (2 Parts)played on the original WurliTzer.
1932
First moves made by Reg to get a replacement WurliTzer at The Tower to suit his needs.
1934 (8th.December)
The original Tower Ballroom WurliTzer installed in The Empress Ballroom, Blackpool.(later in 1970 to find its way into the BBC Playhouse Theatre, Hulme, Manchester)
1934 (8th.December)
The replacement WurliTzer for the Tower Ballroom is installed. Special 3 manual, works no. 2187. Still in place with a number of alterations since that installation.It was played for the first time on 16th.July.
1935
WurliTzer manufacturers present Reg with a gold watch to mark the occasion of the new installation.
(sadly stolen in a burglary at his home in March 1952)
1938
The Daily Express newspaper readership votes Reg as Britain's No.1 Organist.
At that time Reg's salary at the Tower Ballroom was £2000 per annum.
1940 (World War II)
Volunteered for Active Service in the Royal Air Force.
1941 (August)
The year Reg was promoted to Sergeant and, later on in that month, he received the news that he had been selected for a Kings Commission. In the rank of Pilot Officer.This was just two years after his enlistment.
1946
Having attained the rank of Squadron Leader he was demobbed and made his way back to Blackpool. He took over where he had left off in 1940 and relieved Ena Baga who had "stood in" for him during the war years.
1951
A magazine, "The Performer" on the 15th. March made it known that Reg had completed 21 years as Resident Organist at the Tower Ballroom.
1952 (7th.April)
A dinner party on his "coming of age" was organised by the Blackpool Tower Company.
1954 (June)
Celebrated 25 years of marriage to Vera.
1956
As Guest of Honour he "switched on" the lights for the Blackpool Illuminations.
1956 (14th.December)
A fire struck in the Tower Ballroom.
1957 (24th.January)
Reg commences playing from the temporary location of the Empress Ballroom, Blackpool.
1966
Awarded the M.B.E. (Member of the British Empire) in the Queens Birthday Honours List. For services to entertainment.
1970 (Easter Sunday)
Retirement and a "Farewell" Concert in the Tower Ballroom. Recorded by the BBC. (I have the the live tape recording)
Post 1970.
Even in retirement he continued to play at venues up and down the UK and abroad.
He continued to make records in that time as well. Including two LP's on electronic organs.
1985
On Thursday the 9th.May whilst in hospital Reginald Dixon passed away in his sleep.
Having entered that hospital with a chest infection matters had taken a turn for the worse.
His funeral service took place in his beloved village of Poulton-le-Fylde followed by a private burial.
There were in attendance a large number of friends and admirers who had come to support his family in their grief.
Such was the regard that Reg had held in his lifetime.
Literally millions had seen and heard him playing, not only from his live performances at The Tower and other venues, but also over the radio waves and of course on the many records (78's.45's,& 33's)that he had released.
